As one can see, Jane is a very serious girl.

Jane's Character

Jane is the eldest and most beautiful of the five Bennet sisters. Despite her age, Jane is the most naive and gentle of the Bennet sisters. She is oftentimes extremely idealistic and constantly offers good interpretations of bad situations. Jane sees the best in all people, even if this means ignoring behaivor that is blatantly obvious. Although Jane is much sweeter than most and as equally sensible as Elizabeth, she is not as clever as her sisters. This makes her an easy target.

"'Oh! You are a great deal too apt, you know, to like people in general. You never see a fault in anybody. All the world are good and agreeable in your eyes. I never heard you speak ill of a human being in my life.'"
-Elizabeth Bennet (Austen, Chapter 4 [pg 14])

Explanation: As the oldest and most beautiful of the Bennet daughters, Jane Bennet is a relatively shallow character; she uses all of her energy to keep a pleasant outer behavior and a positive outlook on life. She becomes Elizabeth's confidant and always offers an optimistic viewpoint of negative situations. She is polite, pleasing, gentle, cheerful, and kind at all times. Elizabeth points out that Jane turns a blind eye to the evil in people and chooses only to see the good. She is always agreeable, and behaves with good nature to match her (often praised) beautiful exterior. Jane Bennet acts oppositely from her mother's middle class vulgarity.

"Miss Bennet's lovely face confirmed his views, and established all his strictest notions of what was due to seniority; and for the first evening she was his settled choice."
-(Austen, Chapter 15 [page 61])

Explanation: Jane is constantly praised as a beautiful woman as depicted by this quote. One of the reasons for her positive outlooks on life is the near constant approval she recieves. Jane believes in nothing but good because she has never recieved anything but good. Furthermore, her role as the older sister explains why her younger sister gains attention from Mr. Collins teaching her that her beauty may not be praised by all.

"Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!"
"Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!"
Marcia Brady

Jane Bennet is most similar to the character of Marcia Brady from The Brady Bunch. Like Marcia, Jane is the eldest daughter of the family and is thought to be the most beautiful. People constantly comment on their physical appearance in both pieces of fiction. Marcia attracts the local boys, while Jane attacts the attention of the dashing Mr. Bingley.

Jane is somewhat reserved but enjoys being social. Her constant sweet, optimistic, albeit naive attitude makes her a very desirable companion. This makes her very popular among the local community. Comparatively, Marcia is an optimistic young lady whose attitude makes her very popular with her peers. This causes her to be the object of envy by her sister, Janet. Both Jane and Marcia are mature and sometimes shy as well. Both are the first of the family to approach womanhood, and each does so with grace.

1.) Is Jane's kindness and optimistic outlook a positive attribute or a negative one? In other words, could her romantic ideals hinder her ability to decipher reality in a negative way?

2.) Do you believe that Jane's age affects the way she acts and her personality? Explain.

3.) Jane has a very different personality than most of her other sisters. Do you think that Jane's personality was meant to juxtapose with another character's personality? Which sister do you think she has most in common with? Explain.
